Broncos player Alex Singleton suffers cruciate ligament tear

The Broncos’ sudden interest in experienced linebackers is the result of a serious setback. Denver will not Alex Singleton available for the rest of the season.

Sean Payton said Wednesday that the team’s top tackler suffered a torn ACL during the Week 3 win at Tampa. Singleton is out for the year and will undergo surgery in two weeks, Chris Tomasson of the Denver Gazette reports. Denver has since signed both players. Kwon-Alexander And Zach Cunningham to his training squad; both veterans could soon move to the active squad.

This is an unfortunate development for all parties as Singleton leads Denver’s ILB group.Josey Jewell and will be 31 at the end of the season. The Broncos re-signed the former UDFA in 2023 and have seen him have a successful stretch – one that has helped them rebound after a rocky start on defense last season. Singleton has posted back-to-back 160+ tackle seasons and hasn’t missed a single game during that time in Denver.

Payton said Singleton played two-thirds of Sunday’s game with the tear, but knowing the severity of the injury obviously changes the team’s plans. Cunningham and Alexander join a thin linebacker corps that lost Jewell after the six-year teammate in Charlotte reunited with Ejiro Evero. The Broncos also lost Jonas Griffith to another injury that means the end of the season and have to do without a hybrid linebacker Drew Sanders due to an offseason Achilles tendon tear. Sanders could be back before the end of the season, but the team still doesn’t have much behind imports Cody Barton. Special teamer Justin Strnad and former UDFA Christian Welch are on Denver’s 53-man roster.
