It is unclear what exact charges will be brought against Adams, as the indictment is still sealed. It is still unclear whether Adams will be arrested or will turn himself in voluntarily and when he will appear in court.

A black SUV with a sign reading “Federal Law Enforcement” on the dashboard was parked in front of the mayor’s home, Gracie Mansion, on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, a Reuters witness testified.

About a dozen people in business attire were seen walking onto the villa’s grounds carrying briefcases and travel bags, the witness said.

Adams’ attorney Alex Spiro confirmed the presence of federal agents at Gracie Mansion in a statement. He accused authorities of trying to “create a spectacle” and said they took the mayor’s phone.

A spokesman for the Manhattan district attorney’s office, which brought the charges, declined to comment on Wednesday, citing unnamed people familiar with the matter, after The New York Times and other media reported that a grand jury had indicted Adams.
