Watch offline videos: X makes it possible

The controversial Platform X lives up to its self-image as a video-first platform and is introducing a feature that allows users to watch videos from the platform even without an internet connection.

Videos to download: The self-proclaimed video-first platform X has released a new feature that once again puts the video format in focus. App researcher Radu Oncescu shared screenshots of the new feature, which is currently only available for Premium and Premium+ users and only for iOS, on Threads.

As you can see in the screenshots, premium model subscribers can now access the “Add to offline” option using the three dots in the top right corner when viewing a video. It is then possible to select the desired playback speed and quality before downloading the video. The video can then be saved in the offline section and viewed at any time, even without an internet connection.

Focus on videos, criticism for updates

After X first announced a TikTok-like swipe up feature for videos in September 2023, numerous other video-based innovations followed. These included vertical video ads, its own video app on smart TVs, the announcement of a potential Vine revival and even video calls – it is now hard to see that X will establish the format as the central focus of the platform.

Meanwhile, The adjustment has raised significant concerns about user privacy and security. In Brazil, X is no longer available at all – a conflict with the Supreme Court ultimately resulted in a banner for the platform. One of these supports the X alternative Bluesky, which now has over ten million registered users.
