Windows in buildings and cars smashed in a spate of late-night incidents in Westport – The Irish Times

Gardaí are investigating a spate of criminal damage in Westport, Co. Mayo overnight, which saw significant damage to the local Order of Malta headquarters, a library and an HSE housing unit.

The windows of six cars and the windows of a minibus operated by the HSE were also smashed at around 4.30am.

Twenty-one windows in the Order of Malta building in St John’s Place were also broken.

Eamon Berry, head of the local Order of Malta, described the scene as “like the aftermath of a riot”.

He said he was “horrified and shocked” by the extent of the damage.

The Order of Malta building was also used by community groups.

In the adjacent HSE building, triple-glazed windows were smashed above vulnerable users, Mr Berry told Midwest Radio.

“There is also psychological damage,” he said.

Gardaí have cordoned off the area as a crime scene while they begin their investigation.
