Here’s how to watch the Walz-Vance vice presidential debate

Here’s how to watch the Walz-Vance vice presidential debate

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Ohio Sen. JD Vance meet Tuesday for their first and only scheduled vice presidential debate.

Walz, Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris’ nominee, and Vance, who is running alongside former President Donald Trump for the Republican nomination, will campaign for their respective candidates five weeks before Election Day. They have traveled across the country to introduce themselves to voters, paying particular attention to the few battleground states that will decide the winner.

Here’s how you can follow the debate:

What time does the debate take place?

The 90-minute debate begins Tuesday at 9 p.m. Eastern Time. It will be moderated by “CBS Evening News” anchor Norah O’Donnell and Margaret Brennan of CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

Where can I see it?

CBS News airs live on its network and is carried on all platforms where CBS News 24/7 and Paramount+ are available. It is also being made available for simulcast and is likely to be broadcast by other networks.

Where is the debate?

The vice presidential debate will take place in New York City.

New York was often the site of fundraising events for candidates of both parties and was considered a reliably Democratic state in general elections. But Trump, a New York native, insists he has a chance to make it into the Republican column this year despite losing the state in his two previous presidential bids, and has events in the South Bronx and Long Island held.

Harris, meanwhile, has announced that she is skipping this year’s Al Smith Dinner, a Catholic Charities fundraiser in New York City that normally promotes collegiality and good humor. Instead of attending the Oct. 17 gala — where Trump will now be the sole speaker — Harris’ campaign said she would instead appear in a contested state.

How do the candidates prepare?

Walz and Vance will meet in person for the first time on the biggest stage of their political careers. Both prepared for the debate with representatives of their opponents.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg played Vance’s role in preparing for the Walz debate, which took place at a hotel in downtown Minneapolis, according to a person familiar with the preparations. The person said Buttigieg was chosen because he is a sharp communicator and the campaign believes Vance will be a formidable opponent.

On the Republican side, a person familiar with Vance’s preparations said Republican Rep. Tom Emmer — who, like Walz, is from Minnesota — would make a similar case for the Democrat. The people who spoke about both candidates’ plans spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity to discuss the preparations in camera.

CBS is expected to release more information about the debate rules in the coming days.

Will there be another presidential or vice president debate?

There are no additional presidential or vice president debates scheduled, but that could change at any time.

After the presidential debate between Harris and Trump on September 10, Harris said she was open to having another debate with the former president. She said she would “gladly” accept an invitation from CNN on Oct. 23 and hoped Trump would do the same.

But Trump said that date, less than two weeks before the November election, was “too late.” Early voting is already underway in several states.

However, the proposed schedule would roughly correspond to the last two presidential cycles. Trump’s final debate with President Joe Biden of 2020 was on October 22, and the third and final debate he had with Democrat Hillary Clinton in 2016 was on October 19.

Typically, presidential candidates debate each other more than once per cycle, but this year is different in several ways. Debates are orchestrated on an ad hoc basis by host networks, unlike the bipartisan Commission on Presidential Debates, through which debate rules were previously privately negotiated. Trump and Biden debated once this year, but Biden’s disastrous performance in that meeting in June is one of the factors that led to his decision to end his re-election bid and make Harris the Democratic nominee.
