Persistent leak damages road | Carletonville Herald

The Merafong City local government has ignored a sewage leak for so long that it recently started damaging the road.

Sewage leaks occurred on the corner next to St. John’s Apostolic Faith Mission #1. 4859 in Khutsong Extension 2 for most of last year. Sewage comes out of manholes in this area and flows down the street.

Some of the escaping wastewater has accumulated on the side of the road to Extension 3. Even though dozens of municipal vehicles drive past it every day, the municipality ignores the problem.

So much sewage has leaked from that spot that a large pothole has now formed that extends almost to the middle of the road. What makes it even more dangerous is that it is constantly filled with sewage. The hole has become so deep that vehicles can tip over if they drive into it.

The sewage emanating from the main road also poses a danger to drivers.

“We almost can’t live because of the smell of sewage on the street in front of our houses,” complained one resident.

The Herald contacted the township about the issue and asked when the sewage leaks will be stopped and the road repaired.

“The above issue has not been reported, but the sanitation team will address the spill accordingly,” said Temba Fezani, marketing and communications manager.

Despite the promise, nothing was done last week.
