New processor name? Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will become Snapdragon 8 Elite

New processor name? Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will become Snapdragon 8 Elite

Qualcomm’s new top processor Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is about to be launched – but apparently that’s not what it’s supposed to be called. Leaks reveal that the cell phone chip will be renamed. The last name change wasn’t that long ago.

The Smartprix website reports that the successor to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 mobile processor will be unveiled Snapdragon 8 Elite gets hot. This emerges from leaked promo documents for the Xiaomi 15 series, which are scheduled to appear in October. These will be the first smartphones with the new top SoC (System on a Chip). Until now, most experts had assumed that Qualcomm would stay true to the name and turn “Gen 3” into “Gen 4”.

It might have something to do with the name given to Qualcomm’s newly launched notebook processor Snapdragon X Elite carries. A Snapdragon 8 Elite mobile processor would fit the bill – but it still causes confusion. After all, the last renaming wasn’t that long ago.

Qualcomm’s Name: From Complicated to Simple and Back to Complicated?

From 2013 to 2021, Qualcomm gave its processors simple version numbers, some of which were a bit cryptic. In the upper class area the Snapdragon 865 superseded by Snapdragon 870 and this replaced by the Snapdragon 888. To simplify the whole thing, the manufacturer finally introduced the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 with the intention of only changing the number of the current generation in the future, i.e. from Gen 1 to Gen 2 to Gen 3.

But the division into Snapdragon 8 for the upper class, Snapdragon 7 for the upper middle class, Snapdragon 6 for the middle class and so on was quickly softened again. Because suddenly there was also the tuned Snapdragon 8+, as well as the slimmed-down Snapdragon 8s. There wasn’t much left of the “simplification”.

And now presumably: “Snapdragon 8 Elite”, without mentioning the device generation. On the one hand, the renaming can be justified because thanks to the new processor technology, the new chip will reportedly make an immense leap in performance. It is unclear whether the slower SoCs like the Snapdragon 7 will also have the new name, or just the high-end chip. And it also remains unclear what will happen next – “Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 2”?
