The Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra could feature a major hardware upgrade

The Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra could feature a major hardware upgrade

Key insights

  • The Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra may come with a variant that has at least 16GB of RAM, a significant improvement over the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s 12GB capacity.
  • The company lags behind competitors like OnePlus and Google, whose high-end phones offer up to 16GB of RAM.
  • Samsung is also expected to offer improved hardware for the Galaxy S25 Ultra, while the vanilla Galaxy S25 and Galaxy S25+ may not be too dissimilar to their predecessors.

As one of the flagships of the high-end Android smartphone segment, Samsung’s devices attract a lot of attention, and for good reason. The Galaxy S24 Ultra is one of the best phones you can get today, but that will change in a few months when the Galaxy S25 series officially launches. Some recent leaks related to the upcoming flagship trio have not been particularly exciting, to say the least. But according to a reliable leaker, Samsung could introduce a crucial hardware upgrade early next year with the Galaxy S25 Ultra.

In a post on X/Twitter, Ice Universe claims with some confidence that the Galaxy S25 Ultra “definitely” have a variant with at least 16GB of built-in RAM. If true, it would mark a big change for Samsung, as the Galaxy S24 Ultra models offer a maximum of 12GB as standard. Samsung’s recently launched foldable devices, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and the Z Flip 6, also a maximum of 12 GB.

Catch up with the competition

While this would be big news for Samsung, it’s nothing new in the industry. OnePlus, for example, already offers up to 16GB of RAM on some of its devices, with a China-exclusive version of the OnePlus 12 offering a whopping 24GB of RAM. A recent rumor suggests that the OnePlus 13 could bring 24GB of LPDDR5X RAM to the global market next year. Meanwhile, Google’s recently launched Pixel 9 Pro smartphones come with 16GB of RAM, with only the vanilla Pixel 9 having 12GB. Given these factors, to say that Samsung is catching up would be an understatement.

Aside from this reveal, several other leaks have given us insights into the future of Samsung’s next-generation flagship lineup. The Galaxy S25 Ultra, in particular, could get an ultrawide camera upgrade in the form of a new 50MP sensor. We also heard that Samsung wants to go all-in on Qualcomm as all models are expected to come with Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 Chipset that could be renamed according to recent reports Snapdragon 8 Elite.

While we’ve already seen a handful of unofficial renders of the Galaxy S25 Ultra, a leak also revealed what the standard Galaxy S25 might look like. Lest we forget, renders of the Galaxy S25+ surfaced not long ago, suggesting that the smartphone might not be dissimilar to the Galaxy S24+.
