The Thuringian legislature elects a representative of the CDU as chairman.

After the chaotic first session of the newly elected Thuringian state parliament, the Constitutional Court gave clear guidelines for the interim AfD chairman Treutler. The 73-year-old adheres to these guidelines as the meeting continues. As the meeting continues, the CDU MP König is elected as the new President of Parliament with a majority.

The CDU representative König was elected as the new Thuringian state parliament president. König, 42, clearly prevailed against the 38-year-old AfD candidate Wiebke Muhsal. The state parliament had previously decided to change its rules of procedure. A proposal from the CDU and BSW received the necessary simple majority with 55 votes at a general meeting in Erfurt on Saturday. All 32 AfD MPs voted against it.

The change made it possible to propose candidates from all factions for the election of the state parliament president in the first round, regardless of previous reservations for the strongest faction, initially the AfD, as the old regulation provided for. This paved the way for the election of a king.

Under the old rules, the strongest faction retained the right to propose a candidate in the first two rounds. The election of the state parliament president was initially planned for Thursday, but the constituent session ended in chaos and was abruptly canceled. Treutler, the interim AfD chairman, refused to approve motions and votes from the plenary session on Thursday, which significantly affected the CDU and BSW alliance’s proposal.

However, on Friday evening the Thuringian Constitutional Court in Weimar issued a ruling according to which the acting president must have parliament change the rules of procedure before the state parliament president is elected. The court ordered Treutler to follow these procedures. Treutler complied with this instruction on Saturday.

Thanks to the new rules, the Thuringian state parliament approved the proposal from the CDU and BSW, which meant that König was able to run for parliamentary president in the first round of the election. As a result of this change, the election to the Thuringian state parliament led to the election of König as the new parliamentary president.
