No charges in the death of Hamilton’s mother, who died from a gunshot

HAMILTON, Ohio (AP) — The investigation into the February murder of a young mother at a Hamilton home was presented to a grand jury, which did not indict, according to a report from the state attorney general’s office.

Danielle Lovins, 19, suffered a gunshot wound to the head at her boyfriend’s apartment on Peregrine Way on Feb. 16 and died about five hours later at Kettering Medical Center in Dayton.

The shooting occurred at 12:39 p.m. while Lovins was visiting the residence. A man who called 911 was also present. According to the coroner’s office, Lovins was pronounced dead at 5:18 p.m.

According to family and officials, Lovins leaves behind a toddler who was in the apartment at the time of the shooting.

According to Hamilton police, it was initially believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, but the investigation continued and was later designated a death investigation.

Dan Lovins, Danielle’s father, has been vocal about what happened to his daughter in February, telling the Journal-News on Friday that he will continue to fight for justice for his daughter, whose son is now 1 year old.

“I 100 percent see it as murder. If it had been suicide, it would have been reported within 72 hours,” Lovins said in February. He hasn’t changed his mind.

Lovins testified before the grand jury: “I told them everything I knew.”

The grand jury report states: “After interviewing all relevant witnesses to the February 16, 2024 shooting on Peregrine Way in Hamilton … and considering all of the facts in the case presented to it by Butler County,” the prosecutor’s office states that there is no crime.”

Danielle Lovins’ boyfriend has since been convicted of a domestic violence misdemeanor that occurred before her death, which is being appealed, and an unrelated weapons crime.

Dan Lovins said Friday: “The fact that they can’t find anything to accuse this guy of is (I don’t understand). “They said there wasn’t enough evidence.”

He said he would continue to push for more investigations and justice until “the day I die.”

Danielle Lovins filed a domestic violence report against her boyfriend in early January, Hamilton Municipal Court records show. Dan Lovins said he was present when his daughter filed the report and pursued the charges in her absence.
