Exceptional appearance by Kate Winslet: The Hollywood star spent a romantic evening with husband Abel Smith in New York. Just one day later she talks about the tragic death of her first great love.

Despite their black partner look, Kate Winslet, 48, and Abel Smith, 46, regularly light up the New York night. After the premiere of her new biopic “Lee” on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, the Oscar winner and her third husband turned the after-show party into a date night a short time later.

It is a rarity for Kate Winslet to appear in public with Abel Smith, also known by his stage name “Ned Rocknroll”. Joint recordings are rare. The two were last seen together at the BAFTA Awards in May 2023. At the UK premiere of “Lee” on September 3rd, the nephew of Virgin billionaire Richard Branson, 74, only appeared on the sidelines of the red carpet.

Even now, on the US premiere night of the war drama, in which Winslet plays war photographer Lee Miller, †70, Smith leaves the stage to his loved ones. Photographers caught the couple together at the after-show party.

Kate Winslet wears a black and silver glitter top with dark satin trousers, Abel Smith has adapted the color to his wife’s look and opted for a suit with a casual shirt and sneakers. Both wear their shoulder-length wavy hair down.

Kate’s private fate: Her first great love died far too early

Smith is Winslet’s third husband, with whom she has son Bear, 10. From 2003 to 2011 she was married to “American Beauty” director Sam Mendes, 59, and has a son, Joe Alfie Winslet Mendes, 20. And from 1998 to 2001, the Hollywood star was married to director Jim Threapleton, 51. He is the father of their actor daughter Mia Threapleton, 23. But Kate Winslet’s first great love was someone completely different: the British actor Stephen Tredre, †34.

The then 15-year-old met and fell in love with him on the set of the series “Dark Season”. They were a couple for almost five years and remained friends after that – until Tredre’s much too early death from cancer on December 8, 1997. On the day of his funeral, Kate was supposed to be on the red carpet at the US premiere of her hit film “Titanic”. But she was missing to say goodbye to Stephen Tredre one last time.

“It’s terrible to even think about it.”

The “Love Doesn’t Take a Vacation” star remembers this in the new episode of the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast on Thursday, September 26th. “When the film came out in the US, I was at my friend’s funeral,” People quoted Kate Winslet as saying. Then she continues: “It’s terrible to even think about it, and of course I didn’t want to miss it.” Today, Kate thinks that the universe surely wanted to “protect her from something like that” or “just remind her” Doing things that matter.”
