BERLIN (dts news agency) – During the corona pandemic, the federal government set the goal of creating and filling 5,000 new positions in the health authorities by the end of 2025, which has already almost been achieved. According to information from the Federal Ministry of Health, which reports on the newspapers of the “Editorial Network Germany”, the number of employees in the public health service nationwide has so far been increased by 4,833 employees. This includes information from 875 doctors. Around 50 percent of the positions are in health protection and almost 30 percent in consulting.

According to the ministry, 90 percent of the newly created positions are permanent. Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) told the RND that the federal government had drawn conclusions from the pandemic for the next health crisis. “The federal states have let the public health service lose its staff and not modernized it,” he said. That’s why the federal government took action and made four billion euros available to the states to find staff and advance digitalization. “It’s now paying off,” said the SPD politician. With the outbreak of the corona pandemic at the beginning of 2020, it became clear that the health authorities were extremely understaffed and were still working largely in the same way. That is why the federal and state governments agreed on a “pact for the public health service” in September 2020. In addition to the expansion of staff, it also provides for the digitalization and nationwide networking of health authorities.
