The people of Austria are electing a new National Council. For months everything has been pointing to a victory for the FPÖ. What the latest polls say.

Vienna – For a long time everything looked like a clear victory for the FPÖ in the Austrian elections in 2024. But things are no longer quite so clear. The latest surveys in Austria make one thing clear: After the flood disaster in Austria, a change in the National Council elections on September 29th can no longer be ruled out. The National Council forms the second chamber of the Austrian Parliament.

The FPÖ is only just ahead in the last surveys for the 2024 Austrian election

The latest polls for the Austrian election are no longer as clear as they were a few weeks ago: The FPÖ is going into the Austrian election with a lead, but the conservative ÖVP has recently been able to catch up. The SPÖ has settled into third place. Behind them, the Austrian Greens and the liberal Neos are fighting for fourth place.

Things are also getting tighter for the Beer Party, which is running nationwide for the first time in the Austrian election in 2024. The latest polls definitely leave it open as to whether the left-liberal movement of punk rocker Dominik Wlazny (stage name Marco Pogo) will enter the National Council. The KPÖ, which made it to the local council in Innsbruck in April, is also fighting to overcome the four percent hurdle that applies in Austria.

What exactly do the numbers from the latest surveys for the Austrian election in 2024 look like? The table below shows data from two opinion research institutes:

FPÖ is at the top in the latest polls for the 2024 National Council election – Will Kickl become Chancellor?

It is still unclear whether FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl will become the new chancellor of the Alpine republic if he wins the election. The ÖVP, as probably the only possible coalition partner, has ruled out working with Kickl, but not with the FPÖ as such. It is also questionable whether Alexander Van der Bellen will commission the FPÖ to form a government. The Federal President is free to award the contract to the runner-up. According to the latest surveys, ÖVP leader Karl Nehammer would benefit from this.

Whether two or even three parties are needed for a majority depends largely on the performance of the small parties in the 2024 Austrian election. If the Beer Party and the KPÖ enter parliament, the votes will be distributed among seven parties. Then a three-party coalition would probably be necessary for a majority. The latest polls on the Austrian election currently speak for this. (cs/dpa)
