New York schools chancellor and deputy mayor’s marriage plans emerge during corruption investigation: report

NEW YORK, NY – Schools Chancellor David Banks and First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright secretly planned to get married this weekend as they and the city become engulfed in a federal corruption investigation, POLITICO revealed.

According to the outlet, three people familiar with the matter told them that Wright and Banks planned to tie the knot on Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts on Saturday, while Mayor Eric Adams faced corruption and bribery allegations in the middle of a tumultuous week.

The sources were granted anonymity to speak freely about a sensitive matter.

The New York Post first reported the wedding ceremony and The New York Times confirmed that the two got married over the weekend.

The weekend wedding is now fueling speculation that the two senior government officials are seeking spousal privilege, meaning they cannot be forced to testify against each other in a federal criminal case.

According to the release, the FBI confiscated their phones during a raid on their home.

The couple plans to step down at the end of the year, the outlet said.
