Man with police badge killed in double shooting at Richmond apartments

RICHMOND, Va. — One man was killed and another injured in a shooting at an apartment complex on Richmond’s Southside Saturday night, sources told Crime Insider Jon Burkett.

According to these sources, police were called to the LaFayette Gardens Apartments in the 2200 block of Ruffin Road just before 9:55 p.m.

According to police, 29-year-old Malcolm Coleman of Richmond sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to an area hospital where he died from his injuries.

Then, around the same time Coleman was taken to the hospital, another victim showed up at Chippenham Hospital, officials said. He had a gunshot wound that police said was not considered life-threatening.

“Detectives determined he was injured in the same shooting at the Ruffin Road apartment complex,” police said.

A neighbor told Burkett that “there may have been a party” and that shots had been fired.

“My source confirms that this is happening after what appears to be a party here at the back of LaFayette Gardens … closer to the Summer Hill Avenue side than Ruffin Road,” Burkett said.

According to Burkett, there was a heavy police presence at the apartment complex.

“All the police cars are on Ruffin Road. All the crime footage is here on Summer Hill Avenue,” Burkett noted. “Obviously it’s the parking lot back here that they’re focused on. There are detectives on site, felons on site, forensics on site and patrol officers.”

Police urged anyone with information to come forward.

“There were reports that many people were present at the scene of the shooting,” officials said. “The investigators are asking people with knowledge of the matter to provide the investigators with information.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact Detective C. Tovar at 804-646-6739 or Crime Stoppers at 804-780-1000. The P3 Tips Crime Stoppers app for smartphones can also be used. All Crime Stoppers reporting methods are anonymous.
