Wilmington man charged in shooting death

A 20-year-old woman has died in a shooting in Wilmington.

According to a press release from the Wilmington Police Department, around 7 p.m. Thursday, police responded to the 300 block of Campus Cove for a reported shooting in which a gun, believed to be unloaded, was discharged. Officers found a 20-year-old female victim who suffered life-threatening injuries.

The victim, identified by police as Skyler Pattillo, was transported to Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where she died as a result of her injuries, according to the news release.

One suspect, 21-year-old Triston Spencer of Wilmington, was charged with involuntary manslaughter. As of Friday, Spencer was being held in the New Hanover County Jail under a $150,000 bond.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact Wilmington police via the Tip 411 app or at 910-343-3600.

“WPD would like to urge gun owners to ensure firearms are unloaded and safe to handle or clean,” the release said. “Please also ensure that your weapon remains locked when not in use.”
