The demolition of an overhead line in the S-Bahn tunnel between Munich Central Station and Munich Hackerbrücke led to significant disruptions in S-Bahn traffic early on Sunday evening (September 29th). The main S-Bahn line between Ostbahnhof and Munich Pasing had to be completely closed and several S-Bahn trains were evacuated. At around 6:10 p.m., the Munich Federal Police Inspectorate was informed of an arc and a bang in the main line tunnel between the Hauptbahnhof and Hackerbrücke stops. At around 6:15 p.m. there was a second bang, in which the overhead line was torn off and then fell on an S-Bahn line S3 traveling towards Pasing.

Due to the unclear situation, the platforms of both stops were cleared by federal police and train traffic was stopped.

By 7:45 p.m., after the overhead line was grounded by the emergency manager of Deutsche Bahn, the approximately 300 passengers on the S3 were evacuated by forces from the Munich fire department and the federal police and brought from the tunnel to the platform at the Hackerbrücke.

Due to the route closure and the associated power outage, two more S-Bahn trains stopped in the main line tunnel, one just before the Isartor stop and one just before the Karlsplatz (Stachus) stop, each with around 150 passengers. These people were also successfully evacuated by the Munich fire department and the federal police.

The cause of the damage to the overhead line is currently the subject of investigations by the Munich Federal Police Inspectorate. According to current knowledge, the S-Bahn main line is closed until at least Monday morning (September 30th).

The measures involved 160 members of the Federal Police and around 60 members of the Munich professional fire department with 70 members of the associated rescue service, who were supported by numerous members of Deutsche Bahn Security.
