“Jerkiness” could backfire for Vance/Walz

Founding editor of Mediaite Colby Hall previewed Tuesday’s vice presidential debate and warned how Gov Tim Waltz and Senator JD Vances past – acting as attack dogs for their respective campaigns – could backfire.

During a NewsNation segment on Sunday, Hall put the Walz-Vance duel in context, saying the debate will be more about the top priority — the vice president Kamala Harris and former president Donald Trump – as the two men debating. However, there was still a chance for Walz and Vance to make the best case for their potential bosses, and there would still be opportunities for them to succeed or screw up:

Well, I think most people want to hear something positive. And these are two guys from the Midwest who are kind of sincere and respect each other, but they’ve both kind of come into the national spotlight because they’re almost like “trolleys” of the other side. JD Vance somehow cut his bones with Tucker Carlson, who invoked the extreme online right. Tim Walz’s big breakthrough was saying that Trump and his surrogates were “weird.” That was his big thing. If they come out and are very mean to each other, I think it’s high risk and high reward. This could backfire because I think people are tired of the jerkiness. So we’ll see how that goes.

When it comes to politics, Hall said it may not be what viewers will see on Tuesday:

I don’t know if people are really interested in politics. They want to hear goodwill, they want to hear slogans as much as we mix it up. So, yes, I think Walz and Vance will attack each other over military achievements and comments about immigrants. But really, it’s kind of going to be like this: If it’s a referendum on the Biden-Harris administration, then I think that’s good for Trump-Vance. If it’s a referendum on the Trump administration and its disturbing rhetoric, then that’s what Harris and Walz want.
