Man accused of shooting PCt. 4 Corporal makes his first court appearance

HOUSTON, Texas — The man accused of shooting a Harris County Precinct 4 sergeant made his first court appearance Monday.

Athir Murady has since been charged with evading arrest in Galveston County and murder in Harris County for the shooting of the Harris County Precinct’s 4th Constable. Maher Husseini on September 3rd.

Murady remains in the Harris County Jail without bail.

Kathryn Rogers, a prosecutor with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, said this was Murady’s first court appearance in which she and his attorney discussed probable cause. Rogers added that Murray’s attorney didn’t approach the bond issued Monday because it wasn’t ready.

Although he was not granted bail, the judge in the case went over bail conditions if Murady were to be granted bail. She said normal bail conditions would be maintained, including no passport, house arrest and no internet.

“He is a very dangerous person,” Rogers said. “We will do everything in our power to ensure this family gets justice for what happened to their loved one.”

Murady is accused of shooting Husseini as he sat at a traffic light at the intersection of Richmond Avenue and Fondren Road. Husseini was on his way to work in his personal vehicle when Murady reportedly got out of his car, approached him and began shooting into Husseini’s SUV.

After shooting the deputy and then running away, a Houston Police Department source said Murady returned and shot Husseini again before leaving the scene.

Murady was captured after being discovered in Galveston by a city marshal. Murady fled when he realized he was being spotted and led police on a short chase.

In the area of the Causeway Bridge, Murady drove his vehicle into Galveston Bay and got out. He swam in the bay before a boat came by to pick him up.

A police K9 bit Murady as he was being taken into custody before being taken by ambulance under guard to UTMB John Sealy Hospital.

Murady’s next court date is scheduled for November.
