“Emily in Paris” and “Perfectly Missed” were the series hits of the month

Three seasons of series reached an average audience of millions per episode in August: the Netflix hits “Emily in Paris” and “The Umbrealla Academy” with their fourth seasons, as well as the Prime Video series “Perfectly Missed” with its first and second seasons Given the completed plot, probably the only season. The number 1 in the digital series charts is called “Emily in Paris”: 1.306 million households saw the first five episodes of the fourth season, the remaining five were only released in September. “Perfectly Missed” had 1,129 million households watching, and “The Umbrella Academy” had 1,123 million.

Also worth mentioning are the 751,000 households that watched the first three episodes of the second season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”. It’s particularly worth mentioning because it only went online on August 29th, so three days were enough to reach fifth place in the monthly charts. In September, the series is likely to jump to first place with further episodes released in September. Incidentally, the first “Rings of Power” season is in 14th place; apparently some fans of the series watched the first season again in preparation for the second season.

This time, Disney+ has made it into the top 15 with three series seasons: Season 20 of the long-running hit “Grey’s Anatomy” is in 10th place, season 3 of “The Bear” is in 13th place and season 7 of “9-1-1” is in the top 15 15th place.

If you look at the overall ranking, which includes all episodes of a series, the clear number 1 is “Grey’s Anatomy”: The episodes of the hospital series were streamed in German households for more than 808 million minutes in August alone. “The Umbrella Academy” reached second place with its four seasons, followed by the classics “The Big Bang Theory” and “Emily in Paris”.

The most successful film of the month was the data from digital i called “The Union”. The action comedy starring Halle Berry and Mark Wahlberg will be released in almost 2 million Netflix households in this country in August. An Amazon film also cracked the million mark: the action thriller “The Bricklayer – Deadly Secrets”. The two “Kingsman” films “The Secret Service” and “The Golden Circle” are on 3 and 6, while the German production “Spielabend” made it to 13th place the following month after second place in July, putting it in two months together to a total of more than 3 million households watching.

About the methodology: The digital i figures published and analyzed exclusively in Germany by MEEDIA are so exciting because they come from measurements in a separate panel and are therefore quite comparable to TV ratings methods. They show the popularity of the streaming programs from Netflix, Prime and Disney+ much better than data from other providers that are based purely on surveys.

I digitally recorded the use of video streaming in eleven European countries using its SoDA (Streaming On Demand Analytics) platform, including the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and Germany. Mindline media from Berlin is on board as a partner of digital i in this country.

The special thing about the SoDA methodology: The numbers are not determined using surveys and daily diaries, as is the case with competitors, but rather using precise measurements in a panel. The German panel consists of around 3,000 users within 1,250 households. The panel provider is Norstat.
