Sportstarsgala 2024: Vienna honors impressive sporting achievements

Basketball, American football, swimming and much more – the best sporting successes of the year were once again honored at the Sportstars Gala in Vienna City Hall.

VIENNA. Outstanding sporting achievements were honored on Monday, September 30th, in the arcade courtyard of the Vienna City Hall. The mayor drew at the Sportstars Gala Michael Ludwig as well as Sports City Councilor and Sportpool Vienna Honorary President Peter Hacker (both SPÖ) Viennese athletes and clubs for their successes.

A jury of experts awarded awards in eight categories. In addition, young Viennese athletes supported by the sports pool were also highlighted. Four “Extra Sportstar Awards” were also presented for the first time. These went to the organizers of the first inclusive 3×3 basketball event in Vienna and to the 3×3 wheelchair men’s national team Hubert Hager, Mehmet Hayirli, Alexander Suppan and Matthias Wastian.

Also the 3×3 women’s national team Anja Fuchs-Robetin, Simone Sill, Rebekah Kalydjiev and Alexia Allesch as well as the 3×3 men’s national team Nico Kaltenbrunner, Fabio Söhnel, Tony Blazan, Enis Murati and Matthias Linortner each received an “Extra Sportstar Award”.

Strong women

The rowing duo Louisa Altenhuber and Lara Tiefenthaler fetched won the title of “Women’s Team of the Year”. Para-swimmer Janina Falk was named “Disabled Athlete of the Year” and a runner Julia Mayer was voted “Sportswoman of the Year”.

Among the men, the American football team was able to win Viennese Vikings Awarded the title of “Men’s Team of the Year”. Sportsman of the Year was high diver Anton Knoll. The athlete Hadi Hassanzada won the title of “Disabled Athlete of the Year”.

Finally, three clubs of the year were also named: the hockey club AHTC Vienna, Aerial Silk Vienna and Dance Freaks Vienna.

“Viennese athletes are now among the best in the world, or are on the best way to get there,” says Sports City Councilor Hacker. “Of course I also see this as a great compliment for Vienna’s sports policy, because most of the training infrastructure is provided by the city of Vienna and is currently being expanded and improved in a way that has never been seen before.”
