HC seeks status report on cases against Isha Foundation – News Today

The Madras High Court raised concerns over the practices of Isha Foundation founder Jaggi Vasudev and questioned why, after arranging his own daughter’s marriage, he encouraged young girls in the foundation to adopt an ascetic lifestyle, including the tonsure of their heads. The court’s inquiry came while hearing a habeas corpus petition filed by retired professor S. Kamaraj, who alleged that his daughters Geetha (Ma Mathi) and Latha (Ma Maayu) were being held captive by the trust.

The bench, comprising Justice SM Subramaniam and Justice V Sivagnanam, also directed the Tamil Nadu government to submit a status report on the pending criminal cases against Isha Foundation. Kamaraj’s petition highlighted concerns about Isha’s influence on his followers. He accused the organization of brainwashing individuals into becoming monks and preventing their families from meeting them.

Kamaraj also claimed that there are several criminal cases pending against the trust, including a recent incident in which a doctor associated with Isha was accused of molesting 12 students of an Adivasi government school under the Pocso Act.

Despite the petitioner’s allegations, his daughters, who were present in the court, refused to return with him and chose to stay with Isha Foundation. The court’s decision in the case is awaited. The next step depends on the government’s status report on the ongoing investigation.

The case has attracted significant public attention and raised broader concerns about the influence of religious institutions on individuals and allegations of misconduct within these organizations.
