Neunkirchen – It sounds a bit ironic after all the criminal incidents in the smelting town… when Mayor Jörg Aumann appears satisfied with the way the first “Criminal Tango Festival” in Neunkirchen went. Over the past two weeks, around 2,700 visitors have attended the numerous events surrounding the festival, which represents the genre Crime placed at the center.

Then follows a sentence that – in view of the police operations in the last few weeks and months – has an explosive effect among many Neunkirchen people: “The festival was a complete success and noticeably revitalized our city center,” explained Aumann. After all, the financial support from the Ministry of Economics should be particularly highlighted, which is supporting the festival with 192,000 euros for the years 2024 and 2025. These funds will be used to revitalize the city center and strengthen retail.

The festival brought 57 artists to Neunkirchen, who thrilled the audience with a diverse program. Readings, concerts and a true crime podcast attracted the interest of visitors. Other special events, such as the crime walk, the crime bus or the crime dinner, provide varied highlights.

“We are planning to hold the festival again next fall for two weeks,” announced Aumann. But before that happens, those interested in culture can look forward to further events. On October 2nd, the actor Calle Fuhr will provide another highlight in the Neunkirchen cultural calendar with a lecture on the topic “The rise and fall of Mr. René Benko” in the former department store building.

Let’s hope that people in Neunkirchen will be confronted with true crime podcasts in the future rather than – as was so often the case in the past – with real cases… Subscribe to the Blue Light Report Saarland WhatsApp channel NOW and ALWAYS stay up to date directly (click here)
