Based on Manjaro and inspired by CrunchBang, Mabox Linux provides a lightweight, easy-to-use software environment specifically optimized for use on older, slower computers. It uses Openbox, tint2 and Jgmenu and integrates some utilities from BunsenLabs. The current version 24.09 was recently released.

Originally a fork of the fast Blackbox window manager from the early 2000s, Openbox has since been completely rewritten and is now a unique program. This simple and highly flexible window manager is part of Mabox Linux, a stable Manjaro distribution that also includes the tint2 panel/taskbar as well as the X11-inspired Jgmenu menu, designed with scripting, ricing and tweaking in mind. Yesterday Mabox Linux was updated and the version number was increased to 24.09.

At the moment there is no announcement about the release. However, the SourceForge repository contains a text file that shows a list of included packages and the version number of each one. The size of the ISO file is 2.5 GB, and the list of updated packages (compared to those in version 24.08 released on August 22) includes the following highlights:

  • audacious-gtk3 4.4.1-1 (from audacious 4.4-1)
  • Bash 5.2.037-1 (from Bash 5.2.026-3)
  • dhcpcd 10.0.10-1 (replaces dhcpcd 10.0.8-1)
  • Firefox 130.0-1 (instead of Firefox 129.0.1-2)
  • kmod 33-2 (replaces kmod 33-1)
  • Linux66 6.6.47-1 (instead of Linux66 6.6.46-1)
  • manjaro-pulse 20240817-1 (instead of manjaro-pulse 202221015-2)
  • vim 9.1.0689-1 (replaces vim 9.1.0672-1)

In addition to the already mentioned Firefox, Mabox comes preinstalled with the text editor/IDE Geany, the file manager PCManFM, the search program FSearch and the terminal emulator Terminator. However, there is no standard email reader included, so those who want to use one can choose their favorites and install them themselves.

Since this distribution is based on Manjaro, Atanas Georgiev Rusev’s Manjaro Linux User Guide: Gain Proficiency in Linux through One of Its Best User-Friendly Arch-Based Distributions may also be useful for Mabox users. This book is available as a Kindle for 25.49 euros and in paperback format for 31.77 euros.
