Daniel Day-Lewis returns to the big screen after seven years

Hardly any actor was able to immerse himself in his roles as much as the British-Irish star Daniel Day-Lewis (67). The sadness of film fans was all the greater when he announced his decision to retire from the screen in June 2017. But now the celebrated resignation has taken place: As the US film production company Focus Features has now announced on its official homepage, Day-Lewis will be one of the people responsible for the planned film “Anemone”.

Why he chose this film for his comeback becomes clear when you look at the director. This is ultimately Ronan Day-Lewis (26), the second of three sons of the “There Will Be Blood” star. “Anemone,” which he co-wrote with his world-famous father, will also be his feature film directorial debut. Until now, Ronan Day-Lewis had only made short films.

Interest in his debut film is likely to have increased rapidly with the announcement that Daniel Day-Lewis will be making his long-awaited screen comeback. And the cast of the film, which, according to the announcement text, explores “the complicated relationships between fathers, sons and brothers and the dynamics of family bonds” is also impressive in other ways. “Lord of the Rings” star Sean Bean (65) and “The Whale” actress Samantha Morton (47) will also be there.

The production company said: “We couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with a brilliant visual artist, Ronan Day-Lewis, on his first feature film, with Daniel Day-Lewis as his creative partner. They have written a truly extraordinary script and we look forward to sharing their shared vision with the audience.

Farewell seven years ago

In June 2017, the three-time Oscar winner for Best Actor announced with a brief statement that his unique career had come to an end: “Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer work as an actor. He is infinitely grateful to all his companions and the audience over the years. “This is a private decision and neither he nor his management will provide any further information,” he said through his spokeswoman at the time. He had previously appeared in Paul Thomas Anderson’s (54) drama “The Silk Thread”, which was nominated for “Best Actor” at the Academy Awards in 2018 – but for once came away empty-handed.

The announcement does not say when “Anemone” is expected to be released in theaters. What is certain, however, is that Universal Pictures will release the film in international cinemas.
