In the live ticker today, October 2nd, 2024, we are reporting on the first day of the unity celebration in Schwerin on German Unity Day. Here you will find all information, background information, interviews, reactions and information about events and concerts.

Official start: Schwesig opens community festival

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) opened the citizens’ festival to mark German Unity Day. Hundreds of visitors attended the market in Schwerin. “We are celebrating with all of Germany,” emphasized Schwesig, who is currently also President of the Federal Council. A highlight will be the light show, which will be visible at Schwerin Castle this evening and tomorrow evening at around 10.45 p.m.

The Day of German Unity is a very special day for everyone personally. Schwesig highlighted the courage of those who took to the streets for democracy and freedom in the GDR in 1989: “We have the great privilege of living here in freedom, peace and democracy.”

We have put together an overview of the highlights of the unity celebration in a separate article.

Tour of the city: Looking for signs of turning in Schwerin

Today there are special city tours at the town hall on the market in Schwerin. Excursions entitled “In the footsteps of the peaceful revolution in Schwerin” start at 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. The tours are free. The number of participants is limited, so it is necessary to register – this can be done via the city administration website.

Schwerins Mayor Badenschier: Discussions about the status of unity

For Schwerin’s mayor Rico Badenschier (SPD), the discussions and panel discussions on the status of German unity at the citizens’ festival are a particularly interesting point: “To ask: what have we succeeded, what have we not succeeded, what do we still have to work on – that really excites me “especially,” said Badenschier in the NDR interview. In the castle courtyard there is, among other things, the “Future Forum”, where lectures and discussions are planned.

Countdown to the start of the unity celebration in Schwerin at 2 p.m

From today on, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s state capital Schwerin will host the celebrations for the Day of German Unity 2024. The first planned events have been taking place since this morning. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) is scheduled to open the citizens’ festival at 2 p.m.

Safety precautions at the unity festival

The police in Schwerin accompanied the citizens’ festival on German Unity Day with a large contingent. Many officers are on duty on the strolling routes in Schwerin. There is also a ban on flying drones within a radius of around five kilometers around the castle.

A police vehicle with service bicycles drives through the city center in drizzle before the start of the German Unity Day celebrations.

There is also a restricted zone on the water around the castle island, which is marked with yellow bins. The water police are on duty here.

A water police boat is on the move on Lake Schwerin and is securing access to the castle island before the start of the celebrations for German Unity Day.

NDR: Live broadcasts and reports

The NDR Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and NDR Info are reporting live and in reports on radio and television from today until October 4th about the unity celebration in Schwerin. Because long distances have to be covered throughout the city, the television teams have a handcart with which they transport cameras, sound and lights.

Viewers can take part in the live broadcasts from NDR Info near the Marstall this afternoon at 3 p.m., 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. Presenter Romy Hiller will also broadcast live from Werderstrasse near the “Pier 7” restaurant at 9:45 p.m.

Quickly to the minute: The first special ICE arrived in Schwerin

The state capital of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is ready to celebrate German Unity Day. While the final preparations are underway at the exhibition areas in the city center, the first visitors are coming to the city. Deutsche Bahn has set up a temporary ICE connection from Berlin to Schwerin. The first train left at 6:34 a.m. five minutes late and arrived at 9:25 a.m. one minute late. According to railway data, the train’s occupancy was normal.

The final preparations for the community festival are underway in Schwerin. The stand of the state of Saxony-Anhalt advertises with the Nebra sky disk above the entrance.
