Dream start in the EuroLeague: Bayern’s basketball players win against Real Madrid

As of: October 4th, 2024 10:47 a.m

Bayern Munich’s basketball players were in fantastic form at the start of the EuroLeague and in the first game in the new SAP Garden and won 97:89 against Real Madrid.

There were fireworks at the opening: the basketball players from FC Bayern Munich and Real Madrid provided a spectacle for the 11,500 spectators at the start in the new SAP Garden, which has been sold out for weeks. At the start of the Euro League, world champion coach Gordon Herbert’s team beat Real Madrid 97:89 (52:51). FC Bayern’s new coach summed up after the final siren: “It was a roller coaster ride.”

A basketball crime thriller from the start

Last season, Munich fell short of expectations in the Euro League and clearly missed the play-offs. But with the new man on the sidelines, the former German national coach Gordon Herbert, and other high-profile newcomers, a new era is to be ushered in. The Canadian Herbert stands for offensive and courageous basketball. The Munich team showed this against Real Madrid and took advantage of the visitors’ lack of intensity to open up a seven-point lead after half of the first quarter.

As the game progressed, the lead in the multifunctional hall changed again and again. The Munich team, actually the underdog, played a flawless game against a physically strong Real. Thanks in particular to world champion Johannes Voigtmann (19 points) and top scorer Shabazz Napier (25), Bayern repeatedly managed to turn the game around.

Technical problems in SAP Garden

The model for the SAP Garden is Madison Square Garden in New York, which is shared by basketball and ice hockey. The day before, the EHC Red Bull Munich had already shown how to entertain first-class in the glossy hall in the 7:4 win against Wolfsburg, but judging by the way the game went, the basketball players wanted to go one better.

Not everything went smoothly in the new home, which the FCBB will primarily use in the Euro League games. FC Bayern announced before tip-off that some of the new stands had not yet been completed. The client, Red Bull Stadion GmbH, only informed FC Bayern about “construction delays and technical problems” “shortly before the first Euro League home game.” According to BR information, some paid seats were not available.

Kimmich and Gnabry in the hall: “Super loud and super emotional”

And the audience also had to wait a bit for the last quarter because the brand new music box in the high-tech arena was broken. After a replacement was organized, Munich quickly got within four points. When the actual time measurement was functional again, Niels Giffey equalized to 75:75. A concentrated Bayern Munich turned the game around again and was able to maintain their lead until the final whistle. Shortly afterwards, Herbert Hainer and Uli Hoeneß came to the 150 million court to congratulate Gordon Herbert.

Johannes Voigtmann, new signing from Olimpia Milan, had a lot of fun in the new hall: “We would have imagined it the same way, with the comeback in the fourth quarter. The hall was then really there and for the first time we got a feeling for what was possible. It just felt really good. It was super loud and super emotional.”

There were also a lot of celebrities in attendance at the “super emotional” game. After the final siren, rapper Sido brought the finale to this special day for FC Bayern and not only Hoeneß and Hainer were in the stands, but also FC Bayern football professionals Joshua Kimmich and Serge Gnabry.
