Leipzig – On Saturday it happened in Leipzig a spectacular vehicle theft.

According to police spokeswoman Susanne Lübcke, the case began on Gerberstrasse. There, a 29-year-old was delivering lunch to seniors as part of “Meals on Wheels.”

As TAG24 learned from the responsible transport company, everything happened very quickly: the driver had only briefly left his Opel van to prepare the next meal in the hold when the vehicle was “literally stabbed out from under him”.

Unnoticed, a strange man got behind the wheel and accelerated.

The 29-year-old had the presence of mind to stand in the way of the delivery van – which the thief did not allow himself to be stopped and, however, caught him. While the slightly injured man waited for the ambulance and the police, the criminal made off in the vehicle.

Fortunately, the van was equipped with a GPS tracking device, so officers were able to easily follow the trail and secure it just under two hours later in nearby Leuna. Investigators from Saxony-Anhalt were also called in for this purpose.

There was initially no trace of the brazen thief, but during the crime scene search, the 43-year-old German was found nearby. “A rapid drug test reacted positively to cocaine and methamphetamine,” explained the police spokeswoman. In addition, the man does not have a valid driver’s license.

Investigations are now underway against the 43-year-old on suspicion of theft, endangering road traffic and driving without a license. He was temporarily arrested on Saturday.
