This iOS 18 feature may not be all it’s cracked up to be

This iOS 18 feature may not be all it’s cracked up to be

Apple released iOS 18 released to the public in September, a week after the company announced its new product iPhone 16 series, Apple Watch Series 10 And more at his Glowtime event. The update brought many new features to your iPhone, such as RCS messaging and T9 dialing. You can also use your iPhone to record videos and play music at the same time, making it easier to record a video and post it to social media.

Before iOS 18, if you were playing music on your iPhone and started recording a video, the music would stop playing. iOS 18 lets you queue up the right song and get started, but I noticed a few issues with the feature.

Here’s what you need to know about this new camera feature and how to disable it if you don’t like it.

Do I have to enable this feature for it to work?

There is a setting, but it should be enabled automatically. After I downloaded the operating system, this feature was already enabled. So once you update, you should be able to record a video without pausing the music.

Which apps does this feature work with?

I tested this feature with the Music, Spotify, and Podcast apps and was able to play music or audio from all three apps while recording video. These are probably not all apps that the feature works with.

Does sound play when taking screen recordings?

Yes. I played audio from the apps listed above and tried recording the screen. Music was also recorded while I was recording the screen. When iOS 18 was in beta, you couldn’t screen record while playing music, but now you can.

What is the audio quality of the videos?

The audio quality in screen recordings is pretty good. The audio is fairly clear, without much – if any – distortion. If you record a video and music at the same time, the audio quality will decrease significantly.

When I used this feature, the music sounded distant and hollow, and depending on how loud I played music on my iPhone, it could sound very distorted. Apple writes in the description of the setting that the sound is played through your iPhone’s speaker and then recorded in mono using your iPhone’s microphone, which is probably why the quality is not that good.

On-device microphones can work in environments with little external noise – such as an interview in a quiet room – but they typically provide poor quality in more complex noises or in noisy environments. According to captioning company Ava, on-device microphones generally do not offer the same sound recording capabilities as external microphones, which can result in poorer audio quality.

Additionally, recording in mono compresses the audio elements and can cause the sound to sound flat and less dynamic, according to audio equipment manufacturer Sonos.

If the music quality of your videos bothers you, you can disable this feature.

How to stop recording music in the background of videos on iPhone

1. Go to Settings.
2. Knock camera.
3. Knock Record sound.
4. Turn off Allow audio playback.

Now when you record a video, your iPhone will pause playing music or audio until you finish recording.
