“Mouth taping” is intended to help you sleep better by breathing through your nose. Experts provide information on whether masking your mouth can actually have positive effects on sleep.

“Mouth taping” means something like “taping the mouth”, a trend that was made famous by celebrities and influencers. The mouth is closed with a special plaster during sleep to promote nasal breathing. The method is said to not only improve sleep, but also ensure more energy and less snoring. You can find out how recommended this approach is here.

Nasal breathing prevents infections

The benefits of nasal breathing are well documented. It humidifies, warms and filters the air we breathe, strengthens the body’s defenses and reduces the risk of infection. Professor Wolfram Windisch, head of the lung clinic in the city of Cologne and president of the German Society for Pulmonology and Respiratory Medicine, provides information about this in an interview with Pharmacy look around.

But how useful is this in the bedroom at night when the risk of becoming infected with viruses and bacteria is relatively low? Proponents of “mouth taping” expect a variety of benefits. In addition to better sleep and more energy, taping your mouth at night can even prevent bad breath and tooth decay. Some even go so far as to claim that this is a way to slow down aging. However, there is a lack of any scientific evidence to support such promises. A small study with 20 people showed that half of the study participants snored less through “mouth taping”, but the small number of test subjects makes the analysis not representative.

Would you like to try mouth taping? Who should consult a doctor?

According to sleep doctor Professor Martin Konermann, masking your mouth at night is not harmful to your health ZDF-Interview. The body’s own self-preservation mechanism prevents you from putting yourself in danger because of the mouth sticker. These would not be so strong that they could not be removed quickly if necessary. However, if you have sleep problems or breathe heavily through your mouth, you should seek medical help to find the cause before trying “mouth taping,” continues expert Konermann.
