‘Everyone loved him’ Family of Garfield Heights shooting victim holds vigil

GARFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio (WOIO) – Family members of Jose Ervin Jr. held a vigil Sunday afternoon near the site where he was fatally shot two days earlier.

“My brother was the life of the party, he was a legend in Garfield,” Ervin’s sister said. “Everyone loved him, from the police to the children to the teachers to the families.”

According to Garfield Heights police, Ervin was killed early Friday morning after an argument with the gunman near Turney and McCracken streets.

His family hopes his killer turns himself in.

“We’re feeling bad,” Ervin’s sister said. “I just want the guy to turn himself in, you’re on the run for no reason, you’ll always have to run.”

Ervin is survived by his pregnant wife and twin boys, whom he loved dearly.

Last year, 19 News spoke with Ervin about the unique connection he, his wife and his twins shared: the same birthday.

“Now, just over a year and several changes later, you’re covering up his death, his murder for no reason,” Ervin’s sister said.

Garfield Heights police said the incident is ongoing and remains under investigation.
