Medical statement on the Tips report on colon cancer prevention

DISTRICT OF ROHRBACH. The Tips report from the beginning of September about the new option for colon cancer prevention using the FIT test met with great interest. In order to clear up any remaining ambiguities, the doctors Thomas Peinbauer from Haslach and Andreas Dolecek from Julbach have written a joint statement.

About the report: https://www.tips.at/nachrichten/rohrbach/land-leute/657333-neuartiger-test-nahme-die-scheu-vor-der-darmkrebs-sorge

“It is important to note that the information in the last article relates exclusively to colon cancer.” Scientifically, it has been proven that a government screening program reduces colon cancer morbidity and mortality. According to the recommendation of the screening committee of the Ministry of Health, it is recommended to start from the age of 45. The FIT (new stool test for human blood pigment) is equivalent to the colonoscopy and the two are not mutually exclusive, but rather should be seen as an extension of the possibility of preventing colon cancer, but only if the recommended intervals are reliably adhered to. It is recommended that the FIT be checked every two years and the colonoscopy every ten years. It can therefore be discussed with the attending physician which of the variants is more tolerable. However, if the FIT is positive, a colonoscopy should be performed. It should be noted that people who suffer from chronic inflammatory bowel disease or who have a family history of colon cancer should be assessed differently.”
