Take a ride: These are the accident hotspots and planned projects for 2024

Fortunately, there are no noticeable accident hotspots in the Purkersdorf region and the surrounding area, but there are individual danger spots that regularly lead to accidents. While some communities have already implemented preventative measures, further projects are planned to increase road safety. Here is a summary of the current situation and future plans.

PURKERSDORF REGION. “In general, we don’t have an extreme accumulation of accidents,” emphasizes Michael Cech, Mayor of Gablitz. However, accidents happen particularly on the busy B1, which is vulnerable to traffic due to several entrances and exits. “The most common causes are carelessness and excessive speed,” says Cech. In order to defuse this danger zone, the speed limit on the B1 was reduced from 60 km/h to 50 km/h.

“We constantly carry out speed measurements on the B1,”

reports Michael Cech. This is intended to deter speeders and minimize the danger of excessive speed. There is also a road construction project coming up: “We are extending the sidewalk on Linzerstrasse near the construction yard,” explains the mayor.

“This year only dealing with flood damage”

According to Mayor Stefan Steinbichler, the traffic situation in Purkersdorf is also unremarkable. “This year we are mainly concerned with flood damage,” he emphasizes. According to inspection commander Ferdinand Klein from the Purkersdorf police, there are no clear accident hotspots. “Most accidents happen on the B44 and B1,” says Klein. In most cases it is due to carelessness or damage to property.

“The scene of the accident must always be secured; exchanging data is also important.” “If someone is injured, the police will be called,”

Klein explains further.

“No accident clusters”

According to Mayor Christian Lautner, there are no particular accident hotspots in Wolfsgraben either.

“We don’t have any accident clusters, but there are occasional accidents on Kleiner Semmering and on the main road B13,”

said Lautner. However, a project to increase safety is planned for next year: “We will probably divide the road at the Wolfsgraben entrance near Kleiner Semmering in order to reduce the speed.”

In Tullnerbach, Mayor Johann Novomestsky can report that the number of accidents is pleasingly low. “Thank God we haven’t had too many accidents this year. There were two accidents on the B44 in the open area near the lake and two more in the local area.” Novomestsky particularly praises the roundabout in Untertullnerbach:

“The roundabout has prevented many accidents, especially rear-end collisions.”

There are still three road repairs to be done in Tullnerbach this year. “If everything works out with the funding, we are also planning a cycle path into Irenental, which leads from the B44 to the Irenental monastery,” says Novomestsky.

“Popular route for motorcyclists”

According to Mayor Peter Buchner, the traffic situation in Mauerbach is also largely unremarkable. “We actually have relatively few accidents, especially within the local area.” However, there is a winding route towards the Hainbuch municipal area that is particularly popular with motorcyclists.

“Accidents happen there all the time,”

explains Buchner. Repairs are also currently underway in Mauerbach to repair damage caused by the flood.

In Pressbaum there are no clear accident hotspots here either. “There are always isolated accidents, but not an accumulation,” says Josef Schmidl-Haberleitner. District inspector Alexander Pemmer also says:

“Once a year there is a discussion with the district administration in which the accident sites from the previous year are examined; there are no special accident sites in Pressbaum.”

Traffic accidents with personal injuries are also very rare, but accidents often occur in small Semmering in connection with leaves or black ice. Due to speed restrictions in local areas, rear-end collisions sometimes occur. “The biggest problems here are inadequate driving speed or distraction,” says Pemmer. The Pressbaum police take laser measurements day and night and very rarely come across speeders.

However, the renovation of the traffic area from Rekawinkel train station to the Mayer inn is still planned for this year. “We also want to set up a disaster camp at the fire department and secure the Seestrasse by strengthening the bridge,” explains Schmidl-Haberleitner.
