Election Results 2024 Live Updates: AAP gains ground in J&K; BJP tops election polls in Haryana

Election Results 2024 Live Updates: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is now ahead of the Congress in the Haryana assembly elections, as per the latest twists in early trends. In Jammu and Kashmir, the BJP is lagging behind the National Conference-Congress alliance, EC trends suggest.

The counting of votes for the two state elections began at 8 a.m.

In Jammu Kashmir, the NC-Congress alliance has crossed the majority mark with 51 seats. The BJP is ahead in 23 seats and has won 6 seats. In Haryana, the BJP is leading with 50 seats while the Congress is leading with 35 seats in Haryana, according to EC trends.

The majority reached 46 seats in both assemblies.

The 90 seats in Haryana voted in one phase on October 5 and recorded a voter turnout of around 68 percent. Jammu and Kashmir voted for its 90 seats in three phases – September 18, 25 and October 1 – registering a voter turnout of 63.88 percent. The voter turnout was an increase over the 58.58 per cent in the Lok Sabha elections.

In 2014 and 2019, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the Haryana assembly elections. The saffron party is now aiming for a hat-trick of electoral victories in the 2024 elections. The Congress party is hoping for a comeback after spending a decade in opposition in the state. Besides the BJP and the Congress, the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) and the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) are also in the fray

The first elections in Jammu and Kashmir in 10 years

It was the first general election for Jammu and Kashmir in ten years. This was also the first general election in the UT after the abrogation of special status under Article 370 in August 2019.

In the 2014 general elections, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the BJP formed a rare coalition government with the late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed as the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir. However, the government did not last long as the BJP withdrew from the alliance in 2018. Since then, Jammu and Kashmir has been under central rule. The union territory could now be on track to have its first elected government since 2018

The National Conference (NC) and the Congress contested the 2024 J&K Assembly elections as part of an alliance. The BJP, the PDP, some regional parties and independents are key players.

What did exit polls predict?

The Congress party is expected to wrest power from the BJP in Haryana, exit polls showed on Saturday. However, pollsters have predicted a victory in Jammu and Kashmir, which held its first general elections in a decade. These elections were also the first assembly elections in the erstwhile state after the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. J&K was also bifurcated into two union territories after the abrogation – Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

The Congress party is expected to win between 49 and 55 of the 90 seats in Haryana, where the majority stands at 46. This is according to exit polls released after a single-stage election in the state with a voter turnout of about 67 percent on Saturday.

In Jammu and Kashmir, Pradeep Gupta’s Axis My India predicted 35 to 45 seats for the NC-Congress-CPIM alliance and 24 to 34 seats for the BJP. The PDP is projected to win 4-6 seats while others are expected to win 8-27 seats.

While the idea behind election polls is to reflect public opinion long before actual results are announced, their accuracy has often come under scrutiny in the past.

Today’s results will set the tone for the next round of assembly elections in Maharashtra, Jharkhand and Delhi. The performance of the parties, especially the BJP and the Congress, could also have an impact on the upcoming elections.
