For many people, eggs are a staple diet, whether they come from ducks, geese, chickens or quail. These versatile foods can be prepared in a variety of ways, including frying, boiling, stirring, and poaching, and they serve as an important binding agent in many baked goods, such as cakes.

In general, eggs have a longer shelf life, but to preserve their freshness over a longer period of time, certain storage techniques work better than others. BBC Good Food recommends storing eggs in the fridge to preserve their freshness.

According to experts, storing them in the refrigerator also extends their shelf life, reports the Express. They said: “Whole eggs will last approximately three weeks after being laid if stored in the refrigerator in their box or in a separate, covered compartment.”

“Egg yolks can be kept for up to three days and should also be covered and refrigerated. Both egg whites and yolks can be frozen separately for up to three months. Keep eggs away from strong-smelling foods as they can spoil.”

“Fresher eggs are best for boiling, poaching or frying, while older eggs can be used for baking, glazing and whipping the egg whites into meringues.”

Although eggs can be stored outside the fridge in the UK, a constant temperature is ideal for preserving their freshness, particularly in the warmer months or in certain parts of the kitchen. It is recommended to store eggs in the main compartment of the refrigerator, not in the door, and preferably on the middle shelf.

When baking, it is sometimes recommended to bring the eggs to room temperature before using. In this case, you can leave the eggs on the work surface for about two hours to achieve a perfect baking result.

Other foods that should definitely be kept in the refrigerator include dairy products, raw meat, poultry and fish, and spices. There is often a debate about whether ketchup should be stored in the refrigerator or in the cupboard, but it is recommended to store it in the fridge.

Not only does it generally taste better when it’s cold, ketchup can also form mold at room temperature. This rule applies to spices after opening, as contact with air can cause rapid spoilage.
