At the European Championships in Germany last summer, Nico Williams was one of the Spaniard’s outstanding figures and also of the entire tournament; the Athletic Bilbao winger not only scored the goal to make it 1-0 in the final against England (2-1). In the games against Italy (1:0) and Georgia (4:1) there was a kicker grade of 1.0 and overall a strong average grade of 2.42 in six games.

It’s bad for Spain that Williams will now be missing in the important Nations League game on Saturday evening (8.45 p.m., LIVE! on kicker) against the league leaders Denmark, who have so far been flawless with six points and 4-0 goals.

The winger left the European champions’ training camp on Tuesday due to unspecified “physical complaints”, as the Spanish football association RFEF announced on Tuesday evening.

The decision to forego the 22-year-old was made in consultation with Athletic Bilbao’s medical teams and the official national team, the RFEF said.

De la Fuente nominated Gomez

National coach Luis de la Fuente has reacted to Williams’ failure and nominated Olympic champion Sergio Gomez from Real Sociedad San Sebastian for the game against the Danes and the duel with Serbia next Tuesday (8.45 p.m.).

Williams was in Spain’s starting line-up in both previous Nations League games in Serbia (0-0) and Switzerland (4-1), but was substituted both times.
