Should your valet tip be based on the type of car you have?

Should your valet tip be based on the type of car you have?

Should the type of car you have determine the tip you give a valet? This worker seems to be of the opinion that the more expensive the car, the higher the tip should be.

Andrew Latini (@andrewlatini) sparked a debate about acceptable tipping amounts for valet parking in a TikTok that garnered over 213,000 views. In the video, he shows several luxury cars that he is supposed to park and the corresponding tip amounts.

“Cars I drive and how much they tip,” says a text overlay in the video.

The first car he shows is a BMW model with a suggested retail price (MSRP) of $115,000, according to the valet. Latini says he received a $10 tip from the driver.

Next up is a Jeep Grand Cherokee worth $45,000, and this driver gave him $5.

He was then asked to clean a $130,000 Audi R8 Spyder convertible. The amount he received for the ride to and from the parking lot was $5.

And that wasn’t all.

The driver of a Bentley Flying Spur V8S, which he said costs $205,000, gave him just $5.

Whoever drove the BMW Alpina Benz GLE350 slipped the TikToker a $2 bill for his efforts.

And then a Cybertruck owner gave him $20 for snatching her car.

The final vehicle in his video was a Mercedes Benz GLS63, a car with an MSRP of $150,000. Latini says the driver gave him $10.

Does a car’s value determine its valet parking price?

This is a question that people in other industries have asked themselves. Take restaurants for example. Customers have long questioned percentage tips. One person asked the question: Why should moving more expensive food require a larger tip?

Does this logic also apply to moving more expensive cars? This is the debate that came up in the comments section of Latini’s video. Several spectators didn’t seem to have much sympathy for his plight. “Valet parking will never make sense to me,” wrote one.

“For the effort required and what you’re already getting paid, you should all be grateful for just driving a few of these cars. Expecting a tip when you do nothing is crazy,” commented another, who apparently didn’t believe in tipping valet parking.

“Can I get paid extra for my work?” asked a third.

However, the valets received some support

There was a Kia Optima driver who said he should definitely keep an eye out for valet drivers. “I drive an Optima and tip $20, not that it matters, but you’re trusting someone with your car. I’ve seen a lot of bad valet parking attendants, unfortunately only because they got a small tip,” they said.

“I always tip $40 when I return it. so that my car hopefully stays in front so I don’t have to wait. However, it doesn’t always work. 8/10 times this is the case,” they shared.

Someone else said that their bare minimum was more than what some of the people in Latini’s video paid. “I don’t tip less than $10. It’s cheap to tip just $5 in my opinion. Anything under $5 is really rude,” they claimed.

According to US News Money, it is recommended to tip “between $2 and $5 per ride, or $10 for excellent service.” While it doesn’t seem to matter what kind of car you drive, the establishment does matter.

“Is it a cozy beach pavilion where you drop it off or a luxurious five-star hotel? You should tip higher or lower to reflect the level of the establishment,” Myka Meier of Beaumont Etiquette told the outlet.
