Authorities said the officer was suffering from a mental breakdown or was under the influence of drugs when he was fatally shot.

“These were 32-year-old Atlanta Police Officer Aubree Horton’s haunting final moments before he was shot. Horton can be seen frantically running around shirtless and barefoot, then banging on the door of a house. After attempting to communicate with Horton through the door, the homeowner cracked the door open and the off-duty officer “forcedly barged in,” knocking him over. The homeowner then shot Horton “in fear of his life.” The officer was pronounced dead at the scene,” Dailymail wrote as they posted the video on their Instagram page.

The video shows the off-duty police officer running across a lawn and reaching his neighbor’s front door. He slams his body against the door to force it open while screaming, “Kill me.” He then sits in front of the door with his hands on his head. At this point, the homeowner tries to communicate with him but fails. Shortly afterwards he is shot. Police reportedly concluded that the homeowner shot the off-duty police officer in “self-defense.”

What did the police say?

“We believe that an attempted burglary involved an individual trying to gain entry into the residence,” said Douglas County Sheriff Tim Pounds, Fox 5 Atlanta reported. “Once inside, the homeowner pulled out a firearm in self-defense and shot the person. At this point the person is deceased.”

Authorities said Horton, who lived in the neighborhood, may have suffered a mental seizure or was under the influence of narcotics.

“We believe the burglar lived in the neighborhood,” the sheriff said, adding, “This is an active investigation and there are many details we are still working to uncover.”

Horton was a nine-year veteran of the Atlanta Police Department. He was named “Investigator of the Year.”
