To person

Constantin Schreiber, born in 1979, is a journalist, presenter and author. He has been the speaker for the 8 p.m. Tagesschau since 2021. In the late 1990s he lived with a Syrian host family in Damascus, where he learned Arabic. He then completed a law degree.

As an author Schreiber has published several bestsellers. These include titles such as “Inside Islam”, “1000 lashes”, “Children of the Koran”, “The Candidate” and “Lucky in Misfortune”. In his new book “Let’s Talk Openly,” Schreiber advocates “fearless debates” in democratic society.

“Accused – guilty or not?” Starts at 8 p.m. in the Oldenburg Weser-Ems-Halle. Together with the lawyer Dr. Alexander Stevens recreates a murder trial for Schreiber on stage. Stevens takes on the role of defense attorney, Schreiber takes on the role of prosecutor.

Do you have a favorite law?

ScribeThe Basic Law. It is the prerequisite for our free, democratic basic order, on the basis of which we can live here in this wonderful country. When it comes to criminal law, I don’t have a “favorite law”, but it fascinated me because it deals with what is forbidden, about ultimate border crossings, about crimes like murder. Of course, this also raises big questions about the motivation and psychology of the perpetrator. So this is certainly something that fascinates a lot of people.

You grew up in Wilhelmshaven. What is “typically northwest” for you?

ScribeWe moved to Wilhelmshaven when I was five years old, and later we moved away again. However, my father’s family comes from Oldenburg, so I know this city well. My father still tells me at every opportunity that an Oldenburger – even if he moves away – always remains an Oldenburger in his heart. I also have very fond childhood memories of the wonderful summer that we spent on vacation with my grandmother in Oldenburg.

After graduating from high school, you studied law. What fascinated you about it?

ScribeBack then I had no idea what I wanted to do as a career later. There is a cliché that by studying law you keep almost all options open – perhaps even including heart surgery. For this reason I also started this course of study. In fact, I was very interested in criminal law because it dealt with the question of how to get to the truth.

How did you get into journalism?

ScribeBy chance. During the Iraq War in 2003, many editorial teams asked themselves how they would check sources or facts in their war reporting. It was still very unusual for journalists to learn Arabic. I speak the language because I lived with a host family in Syria before I started studying. When the broadcaster N24 called me, I said yes. That’s how I ended up in a newsroom. I enjoyed it so much that I ended up sticking with it.

In “Accused – Guilty or Not?” the audience takes on the role of the jury. Why?

ScribeWe recreate a court hearing on stage and, in the roles of the defense attorney and the public prosecutor, we really throw out the arguments. We have found that people are happy when they are actively involved. Dr. Alexander Stevens and I are both lawyers, which is perhaps another added value in contrast to many other true crime formats.

Are you also discussing a case from the northwest?

ScribeOur current case is the Starnberg triple murder, which occurred on January 11, 2020 in Upper Bavaria. We discuss these in detail, with real documents and original recordings. Since there have been some very spectacular cases in the Northwest in recent years and decades, one of them may be our next.

Why should society concern itself with human “abysses” such as murder or manslaughter?

ScribeWe don’t see “Accused – Guilty or Not?” as entertainment. To be honest, I always cringe a little when I’m asked about it like that. Even the term infotainment sounds too amusing to me. We are dealing with a real tragic case. Of course, it is central to talking about the dark crime and making its background more transparent. But we also want to explain how difficult it is to find the truth and decide on the sentence.
