Diddy’s lawyers demand relief from pre-trial publicity

What’s the story?

Sean “Diddy” Combs’ legal team has accused the U.S. government of illegally leaking a 2016 video of the music mogul attacking his ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura.

The lawyers claim the revelation influenced public opinion ahead of their client’s trial.

In a letter supporting their request for an evidentiary hearing, they requested four forms of compensation related to these alleged leaks, which they said resulted in damaging pre-trial publicity.

Lawyers called for an investigation into the government’s alleged wrongdoing

Combs’ lawyers, Marc Agnifilo and Teny Geragos, have called for a hearing to investigate alleged misconduct by government agencies.

They specifically pointed to Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), which conducted raids on Combs’ homes in March.

The lawyers are calling on these agencies to release communications and records related to the alleged “leaks” to media outlets.

The defense team argues that since March, the government “strategically leaked classified grand jury materials and information, including the 2016 Intercontinental videotape.”

Prosecutors used leaked videos as evidence of sex trafficking

In May, CNN aired hotel surveillance footage of Combs attacking Ventura in 2016.

Prosecutors used that video as evidence of sex trafficking, claiming Ventura was trying to escape one of Combs’ “freak-offs.”

Prosecutors describe these as “elaborate sex performances” that often involve multiple sex workers.

The defense team countered those claims by attributing the abuse to a toxic relationship rather than evidence of sex trafficking.

Combs’ lawyers suspect the government is the source of the leak

The defense team suspects the government is the most likely source of the leaked footage CNN.

They argue that if a third party had access to this video, they would have sold it for a profit instead of giving it to a news organization.

Attorneys also considered the possibility that “Victim 1,” presumably Ventura, shared the video, but rejected that theory because there was no evidence that she owned the video.

Combs’ legal team requested a hearing to clarify DHS’s role

The defense team is demanding a hearing to clarify the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) role in these alleged leaks.

They suspect that DHS, not the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, is behind these leaks.

The attorneys wrote, “The reason a hearing is necessary is to determine exactly what DHS did and did not do regarding these leaks.”

It should be noted that Diddy is currently behind bars awaiting trial.
