Police looking for suspect after shooting at DNC ​​office

Police in Arizona are searching for a suspect they believe is responsible for the shooting of a local Democratic National Committee (DNC) office.

The Tempe, Arizona Police Department announced in an Oct. 9 news release that it had partnered with Silent Witness, an organization dedicated to solving and preventing crime in Arizona, to locate the person who died on Oct. 6 fired at the DNC offices.

Silent Witness is also offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information about the perpetrator.

This is the third time the Tempe Democratic office has been shot at this election. The offices were last shelled on September 23rd, followed by another shooting on September 16th.

Tempe, a city east of Phoenix, is part of the Arizona Democrats’ Maricopa County operation.

A spokesperson for Tempe PD said, “An [October 6] Around 12:30 p.m., the Democratic National Committee campaign office was apparently struck by gunfire. Nobody was in the building. This is the third incident at the campaign office.

Tempe police also distributed a flyer created by Silent Witness that included a photo of a potential suspect’s car, which was described as: “Possibly a silver 2008-2013 Toyota Highlander with a sunroof, roof rack and 5-spoke wheels. “The license plate number is unknown.

Silent Witness said the office was damaged by “air rifle and firearm bullets.”

They also said, “All three.” [shooting] Incidents occurred between 12 and 1 a.m. Investigators are seeking assistance regarding these incidents.”

Silent witness

The image of the Oct. 6 shooting published by Silent Witness shows a bullet hole in the window of the DNC office.

Sean McEnerney, the Arizona DNC coordinated campaign manager, said Newsweek at the time of the second shooting: “Several shots were fired overnight at our Democratic Party coordinated campaign office in Tempe.

“We are grateful to the Tempe Police Department for arriving quickly on the scene and are fortunate that no one was present or injured.”

The Arizona Democratic Party was contacted via email seeking comment.

Everytown for Gun Safety ranks Arizona as the 42nd state in the country when it comes to gun safety. Arizona does not require firearm registration and prohibits local jurisdictions from requiring gun owners to register their firearms. Arizona also allows concealed carry weapons and there are no state bans on assault weapons.

Gun crime has been at the forefront of Arizona Democratic politics since the 2011 shooting of former Democratic congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.

Giffords was at a “Congress on your Corner” event in Tucson when a gunman opened fire, killing six people and wounding 12, including the congresswoman.

Giffords survived and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2022 for her work fighting gun violence.

Gifford’s husband, Mark Kelly, is one of Arizona’s current sitting senators.
