Football and its language: That’s the last thing

Football and its language: That’s the last thing

The word acrobats in front of and behind the microphone are almost as creative as the footballers on the pitch. A certain word always stands out.

A gloss by Benjamin Zurmühl

Football and its language have a life of their own. In the relegation battle, a goat is often knocked over, some lethargic players have to eat more grass and it is not uncommon to see a “death of opportunity” in front of the opponent’s goal. “Header monsters” or “defensive towers” occasionally fly through the penalty areas and defenders use the “scythe” or “monster slide” in a duel.

The “last” thing has been added for some time now.

According to DAZN commentator Marco Hagemann, VfB Stuttgart lacked the “ultimate power” against Sparta Prague.

And a day later in the Champions League conference on DAZN it was said that FC Bayern missed the “final interest” against Aston Villa.

At VfL Bochum, however, ex-coach Thomas Letsch missed the “final gall” on the pitch last winter.

Wait a minute: wasn’t it the penultimate effectiveness that Dortmund lacked? Or the third last gall in Bochum?

Maybe it was just the effectiveness and the bile that weren’t visible. And the “last” thing could have been saved by coaches and commentators.

But in the near future they will probably simply let the players knock over the last buck and eat the last of the grass.
