VMware Tools 12.5.0 is available for download – Native ARM support is now available

In addition to VMWare Workstation Pro and Player, version 12.5.0 of VMWare Tools has now also been released. The prerequisite for an upgrade is VMWare Tools 11.3.5, which are already very old tools.

The new version no longer supports virtual machines running 32-bit versions of Windows 7 SP1, Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, and later guest operating systems. Therefore, the ISO only contains one setup.exe.

OpenSSL (3.0.14), libxml2 (2.13.3), xmlsec (1.3.5) were updated. The WDDM driver supports OpenGL 4.5 software rendering when 3D acceleration is disabled. And as the title says, Windows Arm64 is now natively supported in the VMware Tools Windows installer.

However, there are a number of open problems (in short form):

  • Memory leak while running Ortec application – Workaround To avoid this problem, set the system environment variable to zero – SVGA_ALLOW_LLVMPIPE=0
  • Shared Folders mount is not available on Linux VM – Workaround: For example, add the line: vmhgfs-fuse /mnt/hgfs fuse defaults,allow_other 0 0 added
  • VMware Tools upgrade fails on Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 without SHA-2 code signing support
  • Installing Windows Vista, Server 2008 or Windows 7 fails in a virtual machine – VMWare Tools 11.1.5 can help here.
  • VMware Tools upgrade failed with error code 1072 (The specified service has been marked for deletion.) Workaround: Restart the Windows system and start the VMware Tools installation again.
  • When upgrading VMware Tools for Windows Arm, a system restart warning message window appears when installing Microsoft VC Redistributable – Workaround: Follow the instructions provided in the message window. To restart the system, click Yes. Restart the VMware Tools upgrade.
  • Windows Arm VMs either get a BSOD with DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION or hang – Workaround: You can disable 3D acceleration in the VM settings.
