This is what is known about the crime:

On the evening of August 20, 1989, Lyle and Erik Menendez shot and killed their parents in their family home in Beverly Hills, California. José Menendez was a successful negotiator who served as an executive at the film company RCA and the music company Live Entertainment. Kitty Menendez was a housewife. Both parents were killed with shotguns. The brutality of the crime and the fact that the murders took place in one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in America made the case a media spectacle.

The motive: Why did Lyle and Erik Menendez kill their parents?

At first there was no suspicion against the brothers. Both had told the police that their parents had been found. However, they behaved suspiciously as she used her parents’ inheritance to live a luxurious life shortly after the murders. The investigation took a turn when Erik was in a therapy session with his psychiatrist, Dr. Jerome Oziel confessed to killing his parents. This information later came to authorities when Oziel’s girlfriend, who learned of the confessions, told investigators.

At trial, the brothers’ defense attorneys argued that the crimes were initiated out of years of abuse and fear. They allege that Jose Menendez physically and sexually abused both his wife and children, leaving the brothers in a state of extreme distress and fear. The public prosecutor, however, presented the motive as purely financial, as the brothers expected a considerable inheritance after their parents’ death.

The Trial: Were Lyle and Erik Menendez found guilty?

The first trials took place in 1993 and resulted in a media spectacle that captivated the American public. The jury could not agree on a verdict because the abuse allegations divided opinions. It was only in a second trial in 1996 that both brothers were found guilty of murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The story of the Menendez brothers remains one of the most famous criminal cases in the USA and has been explored in numerous documentaries, books and TV shows.

Are the Menendez brothers free again?

Judge Stanley M. Weisberg sentenced Lyle and Erik Menendez to life in prison without the possibility of parole on July 2, 1996. The brothers were held in separate prisons until 2018. Since then, they have been housed together at the RJ Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego. Both brothers reportedly married while incarcerated but are not allowed conjugal visits. In January 2006, Erik conducted interviews for the first time in which he reported on his crime.

Are Erik and Lyle Menendez married?

Erik Menendez is currently married to Tammi Menendez. The two have been together for more than 20 years. The couple first came into contact in 1993 after Tammi wrote Erik a letter in prison. “Tammi’s love has made me become a better person. “I want to be the best husband possible to her,” Erik told People in 2005. “And that impacts the decisions I make every day in prison. Tammi taught me how to be a good husband.” Lyle was first married to Anna Eriksson from 1996 to 2001 – he then married his current wife Rebecca in 2003.
