This year the Japanese organization Nihon Hidankyo is being honored. This and other topics at lunchtime with Stefan Eich

Nihon Hidankyo has been campaigning for nuclear disarmament for decades. The organization was founded by survivors of the nuclear weapons drops on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. At a time when the taboo against the use of nuclear weapons was being questioned, the activist group wanted to be supported, according to the Norwegian Nobel Prize Committee. Despite physical suffering and painful memories, she works to promote hope and commitment to peace.

The Nobel Prizes are endowed with eleven million Swedish crowns (almost 970,000 euros). They will be presented on December 10th, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death in 1896.

Construction begins on the heat storage tower

The groundbreaking ceremony for the 84 meter high tower took place in Ulm this morning. It is intended to supply the city with district heating. Due to its dimensions, it will also be visible in the silhouette of Ulm from a distance. The tower is intended to temporarily store thermal energy that is generated in surrounding biomass cogeneration plants. This will make the city more independent of gas power plants, compensate for fluctuations in the power grid and save carbon dioxide. The construction of the heat storage will cost 15 million euros and should be completed in two years.
