Carsten Kober, former central defender and long-time HSV player, is celebrating his 57th birthday today. The Bad Schwartauer native played a total of 259 competitive games for Hamburger SV, 223 of which were in the Bundesliga. He became known primarily for his tackles, which became his trademark.

In 1986, Kober moved from the VfB Lübeck youth team to the HSV youth department, which was then training in Norderstedt at the Paul-Hauenschild sports facility. After a year, he was promoted to the professional squad with the HSV amateurs and quickly showed his special talent: clean tackling. Despite his defensive role, he was celebrated by fans for his style of play and was nicknamed the “Master of Straddle”.

After his active time at HSV, Kober continued his career at Hertha BSC and VfL Osnabrück before moving to the functional level. He initially worked as a manager at 1. SC Norderstedt, then with the handball team at VfL Bad Schwartau. He has been president of SC Vorwärts-Wacker Billstedt for seven years, with whom he will be promoted to Hamburg’s top division next season as the undisputed leader of the state league.

“Coming Out Day” begins worldwide on October 11th, commemorating the “National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights”. This day, which first took place in 1988, represents the importance of an open and self-determined life for the queer community.

On the occasion of this day, HSV, together with the Hamburg Welcoming Out initiative, is strengthening its commitment to a discrimination-free environment. The partnership between the football club and the initiative has existed for over two years and is based on creating an atmosphere of acceptance and tolerance in the Volksparkstadion.

Joint actions such as awareness-raising workshops and incorporating the Welcoming Out message at home games aim to raise awareness of the rights of the LGBTQ+ community. A specially produced short film shows both partners’ commitment to respectful cooperation and underlines their mission to promote diversity in sport and beyond.

Hamburger SV may have to do without their top striker Robert Glatzel. In the friendly against Danish first division club Aarhus GF, which ended 1-1, Glatzel injured his right thigh. Shortly after a sprint, he grabbed the sore spot and was substituted in the 85th minute.

Coach Steffen Baumgart was cautious: “Robert felt something at that moment, which is of course annoying, but we don’t want to speculate, we just want to wait for the investigation.”

Just a few minutes before his injury, Glatzel had missed a penalty and thus missed his team’s chance of victory. Last season, the 30-year-old had already scored seven goals in six games after having to sit out the first two games due to tendon irritation.

In the same friendly, the recently recovered Bakery Jatta scored for HSV, while Patrick Mortensen equalized for Aarhus.

Despite the draw, Baumgart was satisfied with his team’s performance: “The team took this test very seriously. It was positive that we were able to give a lot of players playing time, the intensity was high and we stuck to our routines,” he said. “Of course we would have liked to win, but the result today was secondary.”

At the kids press conference, around 40 young journalists asked players Tom Mickel and Robert Glatzel their questions. The goalkeeper Mickel was happy about his current position at HSV and explained that he was not considering any other club. Striker Glatzel, on the other hand, revealed that, in addition to HSV, Real Madrid was also his dream club. A video with the highlights of the Kids Weeks will be published on the HSV YouTube channel on October 11th.
