Trump and Bolsonaro: Partners in Crime?

Trump and Bolsonaro: Partners in Crime?

Today we are taking a trip to America, the USA and Brazil. Both countries have their former presidents, Donald Trump and Jair Bolsonaro, tough to crack. To date, both have not acknowledged their deselection and have cast doubt on the electoral system. In Washington, Trump supporters stormed the Capitol, and in Brasília the Bolsonaristas devastated an entire government district. The mood in both countries remains poisonous to this day.
But the way Trump and Bolsonaro are dealt with is clearly different: Brazil’s former president was given a harsh punishment for politicians: he is not allowed to engage in political activity until 2030. He may even have to go to prison. Trump, on the other hand, is already planning his return to the White House.
One like this, the other like that – how can that be? Is Brazil perhaps better at protecting its democratic coexistence? Moderator Philipp Abresch talks about this with Julia Kastein, our ARD correspondent in Washington, and with Anne Herrberg in Rio, our correspondent for Brazil.
