The iPhone 16 (Plus) and iPhone 16 Pro (Max) didn’t convince you? Would you rather wait for the new iPhone 17 (Air)? We summarize all the rumors surrounding the release, price and specifications of the supposedly thin iPhone.

Please note, however, that although there are many leaks about the existence of an iPhone 17 Air, the Apple smartphone is far from confirmed.

Release: When will the iPhone 17 Air come out?

If the iPhone 17 Air actually arrives next year, Apple will unsurprisingly present it at the keynote in September 2025. Provided Apple sticks to the rhythm of the last few years.

Price: How much should the iPhone 17 Air cost?

If you believe the first rumors, the iPhone 17 Air will be thinner than all older iPhones, but will have a bigger price tag.

According to The Information, the price will even surpass the iPhone 17 Pro Max. As a reminder: The iPhone 16 Pro Max is currently available for 1449 euros (RRP).

However, no trustworthy leaker has yet commented on the exact price of the iPhone 17 Air.

iPhone 17 Air is reportedly replacing the Plus model

The plus is ready. At least that’s what Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, among others, expects. In order to boost iPhone sales, the Air or Slim model (whatever) should take its place in the line-up and compensate for the rather meager sales of the Plus model.

The Bloomberg journalist compares the slim iPhone to the MacBook Air, which took its place between the standard MacBook and the Pro model in 2008.

iPhone 17 Air: The specifications

Slimmer design

As the name “Air” or “Slim” suggests, the thickness of the case should be minimally reduced. Um, how much exactly? The YouTuber FrontPageTech speaks of a thickness of less than five millimeters.

The Dynamic Island should also shrink and take up less space on the display. By the way, the rumor is not new (as we reported).

Instead of a titanium frame, the new Air model could be made of aluminum. Other voices claim that Apple is sticking with the titanium frame, but to a lesser extent (lower titanium content) than in the current iPhone 16 models.

Internally, the iPhone 17 Air is said to have been given the code name D23 and is probably treated by Apple as a full-fledged counterpart to the iPhone X. The rumor alludes to the extensive design upgrade of the iPhone X at the time.

Smaller and better display

The device appears to be smaller and thinner for the iPhone 17 Air. Instead of 6.7 inches, the Air model should be 6.6 inches, other voices speak of 6.55 inches.

In addition to the slight reduction in size, there should also be improvements:

  • Financial support: The iPhone 17 and the iPhone 17 Air will receive the ProMotion display and thus support a refresh rate of up to 120 Hertz (via MacRumors).
  • Anti-reflection: As previously rumored, the iPhone 17 series will be equipped with a display glass that minimally reduces reflections. The Galaxy S24 Ultra already has such a display glass.

A camera on the iPhone 17 Air

The iPhone 17 Air should probably go back to its roots and make do with a (single!) camera on the back. Previously, Apple had only dispensed with additional lenses on the SE models.

Additionally, Apple seems to be planning to place the camera in the top center of the back. Until now, Apple has always reserved the top left corner for the camera element.

The iPhone SE 3 comes with one camera. Apple may be pursuing a similar strategy with the iPhone 17 Air.

What exactly the specifications will look like remains unclear for the time being. It’s quite possible that Apple will still install the tried and tested 48 megapixel camera. It remains to be seen whether features such as “Fusion Camera”, ProRAW or 4K videos at 120 FPS will be possible.

After all, an upgrade is apparently expected for the front camera. Instead of the previous 12 megapixels, the iPhone 17 series will have a 24 megapixel camera. Potentially interesting for anyone who likes to zoom in on the image.

iPhone 17 Air with A19 chip?

Instead of equipping the standard series with the old A17 chip, Apple has decided to expand the brand new A18 chip to all iPhone 16 models. Well, the Pro series also has the addition “Pro” on the chip.

It is also conceivable that Apple will stick to its 2025 strategy and equip the entire iPhone 17 series with the A19 chip. The new chip will probably be equipped with 8 GB of memory in order to be prepared for future AI functions.

Speaking of Apple Intelligence: The AI functions will most likely be part of the iPhone 17 Air – as soon as artificial intelligence comes to Germany.

Action button and camera controls

With the iPhone 16 (Plus), the iconic mute switch is finally a thing of the past – at least on the newer models. Even the iPhone SE 4 is expected to hit store shelves with the new flavor.

It’s hard to imagine that Apple will make a major U-turn with the iPhone 17 Air. The lack of the new camera control is probably just as surprising. After all, Apple put a lot of time and effort into integrating the new button.

iPhone 16: My first conclusion about the new camera control and how it works

It would be out of character for Apple to drop such a feature after just a year. We therefore assume that both the action button and the camera controls will be included in the iPhone 17 Air.

But perhaps the slim iPhone is the big exception here.

Is the battery of the iPhone 17 Air also getting smaller?

It remains to be seen whether the smaller housing also means a smaller battery on the iPhone 17 Air. Exact details have not yet been leaked.

What do you think of the idea of a slimmer iPhone? Do you find such a development promising or do you not believe that Apple will ever take this step? What changes would you like to see in the iPhone 17 (Air) next year instead? Write us your opinion in the comments below!
