“It’s fantastic. As a child you dream of becoming number one,” said Sinner. Finally ending the year 2024 in first place is a “special feeling”. On June 10, Sinner became the first Italian player to become number one in the world rankings. He hasn’t given up that spot since and will keep it at least until the end of the season. Before Sinner, only three other active players managed to end the year as world number one. Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz.

The 23-year-old South Tyrolean had been unstoppable since the 2023 Nitto ATP Finals and started the year with his first Grand Slam at the Australian Open. He has won a total of six titles on the ATP Tour – including his first major triumphs at the Australian Open and US Open – and will try to win his seventh trophy of 2024 in the final of the Rolex Shanghai Masters on Sunday.
