Formula 1 | Mick Schumacher “definitely” an option at Audi

Formula 1 | Mick Schumacher “definitely” an option at Audi

In 2021 and 2022, Mick Schumacher tried his luck in Formula 1 in the defeated Haas. When the US team did not extend the contract of the son of F1 legend Michael Schumacher, the majority of experts still assumed that the 25-year-old was bald was a new opportunity in the premier motorsport class. As a result, door after door closed, and it didn’t look like Mick Schumacher would be part of the F1 field in 2025 either. However, a team boss has now confirmed that the German is on the radar.

According to team boss Mattia Binotto, Mick Schumacher is a serious candidate for the second cockpit at Sauber/Audi in the 2025 season.

“We’re definitely looking at him. He is one of the names we have in mind,” Binotto confirmed in an interview with the Italian newspaper “Corriere della Sera” that Schumacher remains among the circle of drivers who are considering the man when it comes to filling the second car works. “I met him and spoke to him,” confirmed the Italian.

All that is clear so far is that veteran Nico Hülkenberg will be doing his rounds for Audi/Sauber in 2025. There are numerous rumors about the second cockpit. However, Mick Schumacher’s chance seemed rather small. The French Théo Pourchaire and Gabriel Bortoleto from Brazil were recently promised better prospects. Binotto has already confirmed that both are on a “shortlist”. The current Sauber driver Valtteri Bottas can also have his hopes up.

“I know its strengths and advantages”

For Binotto, who joined Sauber/Audi as a strong man at the beginning of August 2024, Schumacher is anything but an unknown. “I’ve known him for a long time, since I was in the Ferrari Driver Academy,” says Binotto. “I know its strengths and advantages.”

However, Binotto will not inform the public any time soon. He now emphasized this: “We have the luxury of not rushing anything because all the other teams have already decided on their line-ups. There are two main options: First, experience to put us on the growth path. On the other hand, a young, talented driver who can accompany us on the way to the top,” says the 54-year-old, outlining the racing team’s thoughts. The team definitely has plenty of experience with Hülkenberg.

By the way, Binotto doesn’t expect that one of his new drivers will be able to take part in the World Cup soon. Entering Formula 1 is like climbing Mount Everest, and compared to the competition there is also a lack of staff. Closing the gap will take time. “It will take five to seven years,” expect that they could be involved in the title fight in 2030.
